Dinner Event with Dr. Kelli Harding
You are invited to dinner on Thursday, September 12th with Dr. Kelli Harding, Columbia University Doctor and author of The Rabbit Effect: Live Longer, Happier, and Healthier with the Groundbreaking Science of Kindness.
The Rabbit Effect
Live Longer, Happier, and Healthier with the Groundbreaking Science of Kindness
A new way to look at our health based on the latest groundbreaking discoveries in the science of compassion, kindness, and human connection.
When Columbia University doctor Kelli Harding began her clinical practice, she never intended to explore the invisible factors behind our health. But then there were the rabbits. In 1978, a seemingly straightforward experiment designed to establish the relationship between high blood cholesterol and heart health in rabbits discovered that kindness—in the form of a particularly nurturing post-doc who pet and spoke to the lab rabbits as she fed them—made the difference between a heart attack and a healthy heart.

Dr. Kelli Harding discovered the rabbits were just the beginning of a much larger story. Groundbreaking research illustrates that love, friendship, community, life’s purpose, and our environment can have a far greater impact on our health than anything that happens in the doctor’s office. For instance, hugs have the power to fight off colds; learning something new or volunteering can add years to your life; napping regularly can decrease one’s risk of heart disease; and people living with purpose are more likely to stay healthy.
The Rabbit Effect is a brand-new, evidence-based framework for heath that synthesizes vast amounts of medical and public health data. It critiques our medical system from within for compartmentalizing patients and treating their illnesses as disparate issues instead of essential and interconnected parts of a whole.
The Rabbit Effect explores how we live, work, and play—the social dimensions of health— affect the body in profound ways, altering metabolism, immune functioning, mental health and the course of disease. Dr. Harding explores why how we treat each other in our day-to-day lives is critical and that kindness is a key driver of health.
The Rabbit Effect by Dr. Kelli Harding is at once paradigm shifting and empowering; sharing a radical new way to think about health, wellness, and how we live.

Dr. Kelli Harding is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center. She is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, as well as boarded in the specialty of psychosomatic (mind-body) medicine.
